Derma Peels

What is a derma peel?

A derma peels, often called chemical peels, are skincare treatments where a chemical solution is applied to the skin resulting in a well-studied and controlled injury to the outermost layer of the skin. The body’s natural healing process results in the eventual exfoliation and peeling of the dead skin cells and regeneration of new skin cells. The new skin is smoother, and the color is more uniform. Treatments can be performed on the face, neck, and chest.

How do I know if a chemical peel treatment is right for me?

Chemical peel treatments are ideal for men and women wanting to correct skin irregularities or conditions including:

  • wrinkles

  • fine lines

  • acneiform eruption

  • melasma

  • hyperpigmentation

  • sun damage

  • acne scars

  • non-inflammatory rosacea

Chemical peels are not for everyone. If you have darker skin, you may be more sensitive to deeper peels. Chemical peels should be avoided with certain medical conditions such as current herpes simplex infections, Accutane use, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and autoimmune disease among others. Persons with a history of herpes simplex infections will receive a short course of acyclovir as a preventative to avoid an outbreak. A waiting period after other skin therapies may be warranted. Certain facial topical like retinoids should be stopped three day prior to having the the procedure.

If you are getting a chemical peel before a special event, budget plenty of time for your skin to heal, so you look picture perfect on your big day.

What can I expect during my Chemical Peel treatment?

Chemical peels vary from light to medium depth. Dr. Albright and her team at Elysian Beauty and Wellness will choose the SkinMedica® peel best suited to meet your individual needs. We will cleanse your skin first to remove oil and dirt so the peel can penetrate evenly. Then a series of solutions will be applied using gauze, sponge or brush. You may feel some mild stinging, burning, or tingling while the chemical solution is on your skin. Fanning of the area will be done to cool and sooth the skin. The entire process normally takes an hour to complete. SkinMedica® peels are self-neutralizing and can be washed off that evening before bed.

What can I expect after my chemical peel?

The SkinMedica® peel causes a temporary yellow to orange discoloration of the skin that lasts for about 3 hours before it fades. After a chemical peel of any depth, your skin will be red, tight, irritated, or swollen. You should avoid picking, rubbing, or scratching and allow your skin to peel on its own. Chemical peels may result in microscopic peeling that is invisible to the eye - this does not bear any weight on the cosmetic success of the procedure. The new skin will be temporarily more sensitive to the sun and sun protection is essential. Proper cleansing and moisturizing is also helpful.

Most people do a series of four peels spaced every 2 to 6 weeks apart to achieve the treatment results they want. Chemical peels are often used as an adjunct treatment with other skin rejuvenation therapies.
