Backed by over sixteen years of published studies, BOTOX® Cosmetic is the most widely researched and studied treatment of its kind, approved in 98 countries. What is Botox?

Botox is an injectable solution with an active ingredient from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. This bacterium protein reduces the muscle’s ability to contract, thus preventing the motion of the facial muscles that cause wrinkling. Botox is also used to relax muscles to enhance eyebrow shape and smile.

How do I know if Botox is right for me?

Botox is ideal for both men and women who want to address dynamic facial lines and wrinkles. Common areas of treatment include the vertical lines between your eyebrows (frown lines, also known as the “elevens”), wrinkles around the eyes (crow’s feet), horizontal forehead lines, lines on the bridge of your nose (bunny lines), and chin dimpling. It is important to realize that Botox prevents lines only related to muscle movement and not lines that are present at rest. It can, however, work to prevent these types of lines. People in their mid-20s to early 30s are at an ideal age for preventative Botox.

Botox also benefits people who want to enhance the appearance of their face and neck by lifting the downward corners of the mouth, lifting and shaping eyebrows, preventing a high riding upper lip with smiling (gummy smile) and softening neck bands (platysma bands).

Botox can even achieve fuller looking lips by its precise placement along the upper lip border. This increasingly popular procedure is also known as a “lip flip” and is far less expensive than filler.

Botox can also treat hyperhidrosis (a condition that results in excessive sweating) by blocking the nerves responsible for activating your sweat glands. Currently, it is approved for the armpit area and may be approved to treat other areas soon.

Botox should be avoided in clients with pre-existing neurological conditions that cause muscle weakness, double vision, pregnancy, breastfeeding, autoimmune disease, egg allergy and skin infections overlying the injection sites. There are also some medications that interact negatively with Botox.

What can I expect during my Botox Treatment?

During your Botox treatment, a fine needle is used to inject precise amounts of the solution into specific muscles per your personalized treatment plan. Each injection lasts only a few seconds, and the whole treatment typically lasts less than 30 minutes. You may feel a slight pinch and have mild bleeding with each injection.

What can I expect after my Botox treatment?

After your Botox treatment, it is recommended that you move your face, such as repeatedly smiling, frowning and eyebrow lifting. Doing this allows the active protein to reach all the muscle cells in the treated area. For the first 4 hours after your Botox treatment, we recommend you avoid lying down to prevent migration of the active protein to unwanted areas. You should avoid massaging and rubbing your injection sites, taking hot showers and baths, strenuous exercise and wearing tight headgear for at least 24 hours. Wait at least one week after your Botox treatment to schedule facials and other aesthetic skin treatments.

You may see mild results in as soon as 72 hours after your Botox treatment, but it will take a full two weeks before you see maximum results. If you are new to BOTOX® Cosmetic, we will schedule a follow-up visit two weeks out to evaluate the need for touchups. Botox results typically last for three to four months, but the longevity varies from patient to patient and may last up to six months. Men typically require Botox injections more frequently than women. Beginners will have shorter lasting results because Botox effectiveness improves over time considering that the muscles do not return to full function after sequential treatments.

The experienced team at Elysian Beauty and Wellness will soften your lines while still allowing you to move your muscles enough to look natural. You will still be able to convey emotions and facial expressions.

Some potential side effects to Botox include mild pain, swelling and bruising around the injection site, headache, influenza-like symptoms, and eye dryness. Eyelid droop is uncommon (less than 1%) after Botox administration, but should it occur there is a prescription eye drop (Iopidine*) that can correct it.

How much will it cost?

Botox is charged either per unit when several areas are treated or by al a carte for single area treatment. At Elysian Beauty and Wellness, the charge for Botox is $12 per unit. Depending on what areas you wish to treat, the cost will vary. Remember that discounts are applied for bundling services. Following are typical treatment amounts.
